1 Cross Cutting Concepts (CCC)
7/31 and 8/1

2 The crosscutting concepts are the lens through which scientists think about the natural world.
They are the big ideas that connect the sciences and help to understand nature and how science and engineering work. Students who understand the crosscutting concepts will have a deeper understanding of science ideas. What is a CCC?

3 There are 7 different lenses that we will look at throughout the year.
Systems Cause and Effect Energy and Matter Patterns Scale and Proportion Structure and Function Stability and Change

4 CCC Station activities
We are going to look at the CCCs by doing station activities. You will have 7 minutes at each station. At the station you must: Follow the direction on the table and do the activities Fill out the first 2 columns on your worksheet at each station. Only rotate when you hear the signal.

5 CCC Speed Dating Each one of you is going to get either a card with a name of a CCC OR the real definition of the CCC. Your goal is to mingle around the room and find the matching pairs. ***There are going to be some repeats Show definition matches once everyone has found their pairs.

6 “Speed Dating” Definitions key
Patterns The CCC of ____ highlights that structures or events are often consistent and repeated. Cause and effect The CCC of ____ investigates how things are connected by identifying the reasons behind an occurrence, and what that occurrence results in. Scale, proportion, and quantity Different measures of size and time affect a system’s structure, performance, and our ability to observe phenomena. Systems and system models The CCC of _____ helps us understand the world by describing how things connect and interact. We can use simple representations to explore these interactions. Energy and matter These things are neither created nor destroyed, but may flow into and out of a system and influence its functioning. Structure and function The way something is built and the parts that it has determine how it works. Stability and change Over time, a system might stay the same or become different, depending on a variety of factors.

7 Now that you are in your groups...
There are groups of pictures placed around the room. As a group, rotate around the classroom and try to figure out what each picture group represents.

8 Create your own picture in the last column
Use what you have learned to create a picture that is going to help you remember each CCC.

9 Why do we need to learn about CCCs?
