“When I see you through my eyes I think we are different
“When I see you through my eyes I think we are different. When I see you through my heart I know we are the same.” -Doe Zantamata

My name is Tiffany Graves, I am 20 years old and attend Francis Marion University. I am biracial and took Racial Discovery to help me understand the different aspects of other races. I have found interests in articles that relate to similar subjects discussed while talking about race during this class. In in this presentation I will be discussing the articles that I feel are relevant and contain information that can help others see different points of view.

Can my Child be Friends with white people?
l-friendship-donald-trump.html?smid=fb-share Here is an article that asks the question, “can my child be friends with white people?” Of course! We have to ask this in todays society because white/black children could be raised to treat those of the opposite race different than themselves. “We cannot agree on our politics, but we can declare that we stand beside one another against cheap attack and devaluation; that we live together and not simply beside one another.”

This is the picture from the article
This is the picture from the article. This is sad we have to ask this question in 2017 but if we come together to stop the hatred and realize no one is better than the person beside them, racism could come to an end.

Implicit Bias Definition: the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner. This next article written by a Caucasian woman Lorie Fridell who elaborates on implicit bias and how she just like everyone else suffers from it.
8
Why do U.S. Police keep killing unarmed black men?
FrideIl states. “ I am more likely to see threat in African Americans than I would Caucasians.” Why is this? Simply because this is how the media shows African American men today. You always see them committing violent acts that are displayed through news and social media and rarely see anyone of the Caucasian race committing violent acts and this just confirms the African American stereotype!

There Is No justice In America For Black People Killed by Cops
justice_us_59444c46e4b0f15cd5bb6415 Philando Castile was one of many African American men killed by U.S. officers and here is an article stating how the officer who killed him was only acquitted and went home to his family. This is clearly racism because the officer was punished in the most minimal way possible and why it is a topic to be discussed and not ignored!

Conversation Between Yanez and Castile
“Sir, I have to tell you, I do have a firearm on me,” Castile can be heard saying in a dash camera video of the shooting released on June 20. “Don’t reach for it then,” says Yanez, as he appears to place his hand on his service weapon. “I’m not pulling it out.” “Don’t pull out!” Yanez yells, before unholstering his gun and placing the barrel into the car. “Don’t pull it out!” “I’m not!” yells Castile. Yanez shot seven times into the vehicle. He thought Castile was reaching for his gun, which Castile was licensed to carry. Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, says Castile was actually reaching for his wallet. She began filming on her phone. The resulting video, with Castile bleeding to death on camera as Reynolds calmly complies with the officer’s screamed instructions, is impossible to forget.

Here is Valerie Castile, Philando Castile’s mother.
This is a murder and the officer got away with it simply because he had the uniform on.

Race is a social construct, scientist argue
construct-scientists-argue/ "It's a concept we think is too crude to provide useful information, it's a concept that has social meaning that interferes in the scientific understanding of human genetic diversity and it's a concept that we are not the first to call upon moving away from.” Michael Yudell

What this class did for me?
This was an unforgettable experience that taught me many life lessons I will never forget. Such as: Everyone has biases that they may or may not know about Before you judge someone think about your implicit biases
