The Case of the Garbage Flow
The situation: You’re a scientific researcher and you want a $50,000 grant from the government to do some research on pollution in the Bay of Houston. You’ve got to show the Mayor, Annise Parker, that polluted water is ruining from the streets out to the Bay so she’ll give you the cash! The Question: What do you think you could do to find out which way polluted water flows when it rains?

HOW ABOUT USING A… MAP? What??? How could a map help me know which way all that polluted water will flow?

So what exactly is a map? Maps are tools that show what the earth is like. There are many different types of maps, each of which give different information and are used for different reasons. Today we’re going to look at two: Political Maps and Physical Maps

Types of Maps Political Map Shows boundaries (borders)
Shows cities, states, countries, etc. Shows shapes and sizes of regions A boundary is a line that separates two things

Shows physical features (what the land is like) Physical features could be: Mountains Hills Rivers Plains Deserts

(1) What type of map is it? WHY? (2) Which type of map would be best? WHY? You will have 20 seconds with your group to discuss and decide your answer… 1 arm = political map 2 arms = physical map

You want to know if there is a desert in California… A physical map would be best because it shows landforms, and a desert is what the land is like.

You want to know which states border Texas… A political map would be best because it shows boundaries between different places.

You want to build your home on flat land near a beach… A physical map would be best because it shows what the land is like, and you need it to be flat.

You want to compare the size of the United States and Mexico… A political map would be best because it shows boundaries and we can compare the size of places.

Longitude- Imaginary lines that run North to South parallel to the Prime Meridian.
Latitude- Imaginary lines that run East to West parallel to the equator. Equator- Center line of latitude. Prime Meridian- Center line of longitude. Hemisphere- Half of the Earth. Can be divided East and West or North and South. Compass Rose- Shows the directions on the map (North, South, East, West) Legend/ Key- Explains what the symbols and colors on the map represent. Map Scale- Shows how much distance on Earth is shown on the map. Absolute Location- The exact point where a place is located. Relative Location- Where a place is located in relation to other places.
