1 Alexander Graham Bell and the Invention of the Telephone By Nicholas Hyatt April 2, 2009

2 Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3, 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His parents were Eliza Grace and Alexander Melville Bell. When he was a kid he liked to experiment about the world around him. Without taking any lessons he learned how to play the piano. His mom started to lose her hearing when he was 12 years old. He learned sign language, he cupped his hands on his moms forehead and spoke into his hands to communicate with her. His dad taught deaf people to speak and read lips.

3 Before the telephone was invented people used the telegraph to send messages to people in other towns. The telegraph used Morse code to send the message. Morse code is a system of dots and dashes used to represent the letters of the alphabet, it is still used today. The problem with the telegraph was that it could only send or receive one message at a time on one wire. The telegraph people wanted to find a way to send and receive more than one message at a time without building more telegraph lines.
