Focus Question #2 How Did Ideas of National Identity and Citizenship Begin to Develop the Renaissance? Chapter 3 Social Studies 8

2 National Identity and Citizenship
The idea of many nations (countries) began to develop during the Renaissance. This has formed our worldview (western worldview) Near the end of the Renaissance, small political units joined together to form larger states. Nation, mercenary

3 GAME! Rules for trading! Can only trade with someone who has a similar colour pool noodle as you Can only trade with someone of a similar gender Can only offer trade to a shorter person Can only offer trade with someone cooler Can only trade with someone of the same birth month

4 States turned into countries…
Many reasons why these states turned into countries: 1) Power was shifting from rural areas to large cities. Monarch supported this shift by improving trade laws and lifting trade barriers (made trade easier). The cities then gave more allegiance to the monarchs because of their support of trade.

2) Identities and belonging developed because of a common language, religion, and beliefs in what life should be. 3) National identity developed because of the Printing Press. History books about countries provided a common history and heroes for people.

4) Exploration of new land led to national identity also. Exploration led to colonies being established similar to the ones that already existed. This brought wealth, prestige and popularity to the founding country.

7 States turned into countries…
5) Gunpowder (introduced by China) was used by Monarchs to overpower nobles. Monarchs would use taxes to buy gunpowder, hire mercenary soldiers who would then overpower the nobles. This allowed Kings to overpower nobles and acquire their land, which made larger states.

8 So, what led to the formation of countries?
No one single factor. All of these five factors combined led to changes at approximately the same time during the Renaissance.

9 Changes in European Societies Show a Changing Worldview
Social System People identified themselves as citizens of a country, and therefore gave their allegiance to the country or monarch. Exporation of new lands and what the world had to offer increased feelings of optimism and European worldview. People moved up and down within the class system without restirction Government provided public services Modern states power increase put them in direct competition with the Church.

Political and Economic Systems Policies were set up to make sure there was political (government) and economic (money) independence Taxes paid for permanent armies Resources were provided for war and exploration Rules were established that the whole country needed to follow Trade rules and tax rules controlled trade and business.

Culture Common national language unified citizens Middle and upper class could now read and write, and became more conscious of their country’s history Religious literature was also published in their own languages, which led to national identity Shared culture was expressed in a single, unified language created by the various dialects (which became the national language)
