Aug 10, 1792 – Parisians storm the palace and slaughter the king’s guards
Thought the king was in with enemies
King narrowly escapes
Sept, 1792 – September Massacres… .1,200 prisoners

4. Radicals Take Control of Assembly
Called for election of new legislative body
National Convention
Demanded SUFFRAGE to all male citizens
In Sept – voted to abolish monarchy
Established the French Republic
Jacobins seized nobles’ lands
King Louis XVI tried and executed (Jan 1793)
Marie Antoinette executed (Oct 1793)

The Committee of Public Safety (12 people) issued a tax on all citizens to help the war effort.
The same 12 people were in charge of trials and executions.
