3 1792ish The wars abroad heightened tension. Prussians are whipping the French. Desertion! Aug 10, 1792 – Parisians storm the palace and slaughter the king’s guards Thought the king was in with enemies King narrowly escapes Sept, 1792 – September Massacres… .1,200 prisoners

4 Radicals Take Control of Assembly
Called for election of new legislative body National Convention Demanded SUFFRAGE to all male citizens In Sept – voted to abolish monarchy Established the French Republic Jacobins seized nobles’ lands King Louis XVI tried and executed (Jan 1793) Marie Antoinette executed (Oct 1793)

7 These people are CRAZY! France was at war with much of Europe $$$
The Committee of Public Safety (12 people) issued a tax on all citizens to help the war effort. The same 12 people were in charge of trials and executions.

8 Maximilien Robespierre
Leader of the Committee of Public Safety Jacobin “Incorruptible” / Tyrant Religious toleration and wanted to abolish slavery (believed in Rousseau) “Liberty cannot be secured unless criminals lose their heads”

9 Reign of Terror (Sept 1793 – July 1794
“Hail to the Republic!” “Death to Traitors!” About 300,000 were arrested / 17,000 executed Eventually the Convention became fearful and turned on the Committee of Public Safety Robespierre arrested and executed July 26/ Guillotine

11 The Directory (3rd Stage) 1795 - 1799
3rd Constitution is written in 1795 5 man Directory and 2 house legislature Weak but dictatorial War still goes on with Austria and Great Britain Bread prices rising AGAIN! Emigres coming back! Want monarch! Had majority in the 1797 legislature Good Grief! CHAOS

12 Napoleon The people turned to Napoleon Bonaparte
Military hero; victorious! Will outwit politicians to become ruler of France

13 10 years this revolution… sheesh!
No more monarchy No more Church rule Tricolor = liberty and equality of males “citizen” applies to ALL social classes The people had strong sense of NATIONALISM National song! “La Marseillaise” Abolished slavery in the Caribbean
