Under federalism, the national (federal) government has certain powers called delegated powers.

Delegated powers include: the ability to maintain a military, declare war, make treaties, and coin money.

Under federalism, state governments have certain powers called reserved powers.

Reserved powers include: the ability to establish local governments and schools, run elections, and license drivers, marriages, teachers, etc.

Under federalism, the national government and state governments share certain powers called concurrent powers.

Concurrent powers include: the ability to enforce laws, maintain courts, build roads, and collect taxes.
