Pulling Together HPT-10 Rules(Guiding Values)

HPT-Things That Fly
8
HPT-Things That Fly Why Geese?
9
HPT-Put the Team First 1. The flock-Putting the Team First: Leader & Team Members By flying together in a V-formation, scientists estimate that the whole flock can fly about 70% farther with the same amount of energy than if each goose flew alone Lesson: Creating & sharing a common WE vision, mission & goals (direction) gets us (WE) farther quicker that alone.
10
HPT-Communicate Openly-Candidly
2. Geese honk from behind to communicate encouragement for other “Team members” to keep up. Lessons: We need to make sure our honking is encouraging Open encouragement & recognition = greater motivation & results
11
HPT-Be Part of the Solution, Not Part of the Problem
3. As part of the solution-When a goose gets sick or injured 2 geese drop out of formation to stay with their “teammate” to help & protect. Lessons: WE will stand by each other in difficult times as well as when going well. -Angeles Arien Focus on contributing to growth & helping team members
12
HPT-Respect Diversity
4. Geese respect & take full advantage of the flock diversity by leveraging the power & strength of each “member”. Lessons Build & use the team’s variety of skills & experiences WE need to stay in formation to benefit from the power of team energy & collaboration
13
HPT-Ask & Encourage the Right Questions
5. By communicating signals & connecting (aka asking questions) geese are able to encourage team members & support focus, direction & pulling the flock to it’s destination (Goal). Lessons: Asking right questions/listening WE are productive, positive, creative and collaborative. Use “inquiry”-the power of the WE question & listening 5Ws & H (What, Where, When, Why, Who & How)
14
HPT-Use a Rational Problem Solving Process
6. Geese completely problem solve barriers to their route (goal-direction) by quickly adjusting to out of formation drag, V line of sight, “off course” path & destination obstacles. Lessons: WE need to use experience & systematic tools to: Identify what is the problem situation Select, apply & track the best balanced solution
15
HPT-Problem Solving Processes
SMART Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic Timebound FOCUSPDCA Find a process to improve Organize a team (WE) Clarify current knowledge Understand process variation Select a SMART improvement strategy Plan the work Do the plan Check/study/report results Act on findings
16
HPT-Build Trust with Integrity & Example
7. Trust is demonstrated by geese when the lead goose rotates back into the formation and allows another goose to take the leadership position. Lessons: Develop, demonstrate & share meaningful “trust” leadership Good-Great 7. Build Trust with Integrity & Example: (#1 success factor) 1st define Integrity: honest, principled Fact: When the lead goose tires, it rotates back into the formation and another goose flies to the point position. Lesson: Develop, demonstrate & share leadership. As with geese, people are interdependent on each other’s skills, capabilities and unique arrangements of gifts, talents or resources. Trust=faith in action before it happen ---Key actions to build & sustain TRUST -Walk the Talk Lead by Example. If you want to build trust within your team, then lead by example , and show your people that you trust others. ...show respect for all. Mean what you say-say what you mean. Lips & Feet Communicate Openly & Candidly (Rule 2). Open communication is essential for building trust. ... Know Each Other Personally. ... Don't Place Blame. ... Discourage Cliques. ... Discuss Trust Issues. Takes 2 minutes to destroy trust.

HPT-Build Trust with Integrity & Example
Lesson: Good-Great, when the members trust each other enough to surrender the “me’ to “We”. 7. HPT-Commit to Excellence
8. Geese demonstrate excellence by repeating best practices that lead to a successful journey for all team members. Lessons: Focus on positive change actions (strengths) & continuous improvement Know & apply best practices continuously & adapt to changes 8. Fact: Geese demonstrate excellence by repeating best practices that lead to a successful journey for all team members. Lessons: Commit to Excellence Focus on positive change actions (strengths) and continuous improvement Green-Red (adapting) Know and apply best practices continuously –The habit applying best practices Know and apply best practices continuously (Blue Angels, championship teams, Gold medal winners) As a coach, what should the team do to improve the situation? The team is very late. The 6 indicators of excellence: Alignment - a deep sense of vision or purpose that is shared among team members. Team effectiveness - strong internal processes that allow coordinated efforts, such as shared values, trust, open communication, flexibility, and decision making. Empowerment - feeling empowered to do what is necessary; personal and collective power. Passion - high and sustained levels of energy, enthusiasm, excitement, and confidence. Commitment - deep commitment to the purpose of the team and to each other. Results - accomplishing outstanding results based on high standards.

HPT-Promote Independent Thinking
9. Geese use their intelligence (independent thinking), instinct & interdependency to adapt to challenging or new environments (habitats/route). Lesson: Increase the use of critical independent thinking to move from WIIFM to WIIFW(E). It’s not all about me--it’s all about WE. A balance (being empowered) 9. Promote Independent Thinking----Geese use their intelligence (independent thinking), instinct & interdependency to adapt to challenging or new environments (habitats/route). Lesson: Increase the use of critical independent thinking to move from WIIFM to WIIFW(e). It’s not all about me--it’s all about WE. A balance (being empowered). Independent thinking does not imply inability to collaborate as a team—it is a requirement of productive collaboration. Blind followers do not have any original ideas to contribute to the group’s efforts. No independent thinking = blind leading the blind or group think

HPT-Pull The Weeds 10. Collective cultivation of flock growth (Pull the Weeds) is shown by alignment, patience, perseverance & caring. Lessons: Takes time to build, develop & grow effective HPT Identify & increase strengths and reduce weak areas Consistently identify/remove barriers 10. Pull the Weeds----Cultivation of growth: Collective cultivation of flock growth (Pull the Weeds) is shown by patience, perseverance & caring. Lesson: Takes time to build, develop & grow effective teamwork, relationships & success. Increase strengths and reduce weak areas. Takes time to build, develop & grow effective HPT teamwork, relationships & success. Identify & increase strengths and reduce weak areas. Consistently identify/remove barriers ----hindering team growth-outdated skills, no recognition, low participation ---3M’s Miscommunication, Misalignment, Misinterpetations Focus on the prize (goal) & reduce the time spent on the less critical many. 20/80 rule.

Conclusion When you see geese flying, use this Power of We moment to reflect how smart they are and what can be learned. They teach us to: Be an effective leader & follower Work as a HPT team Share the tough jobs-build skills & trust Honk from behind to encourage & recognize others. Individual talent, as impressive as it may be, will only be multiplied when that person teams with others-the Power of WE.
