3 FM What is advocacy? Family Medicine Strong
Get suggestions from the audience.

4 ad·vo·ca·cy noun - public support for or recommendation of a particular cause or policy. - the profession or work of a legal advocate. FM Family Medicine Strong Origin: late Middle English: via Old French from medieval Latin advocatia, from advocare ‘summon, call to one's aid’ (see advocate).

5 What are your experiences with advocacy?
Ask about experiences from audience members. Family Medicine Advocacy Summit. Meeting with Staff of Sen. Jeff Flake. We met as a group with staff of both Senators and met individually (or in pairs) with the Congressional Delegates representing our districts. Here we are discussing the importance of family medicine and need for rural GME, the opioid crisis, and the need for research into maternal morbidity and mortality.

6 How do you feel about advocacy?
Excited! Intimidated! Not ready! Acknowledge the different levels of experience with advocacy in the room. Excited! This is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and invest in new relationships! Intimidated! Politicians don’t expect you to be experts in politics. They want to hear about your experience in medicine. Not ready! Just like every test you’ve taken or presentation you’ve given, it’s important to prepare. However, if you don’t know the answer to a question, saying something like, “I don’t know the answer to that, but I’d be happy to look into it and get back to you,” opens doors for future communication. Not interested! Not interested! Add a footer

7 Rural Graduate Medical Education Innovation
The AAFP urges US Senators to support the Rural Physician Workforce Production Act of 2018 Rural areas disproportionately lack access to primary care physicians. The bill enhances hospitals ability to pay for rural residency training. This includes programs that are based primarily in urban and suburban areas (like our program!) I was surprised by how “political” residency training can be! So, even if you’re not directly interested in advocacy, know that it is working for you! Why is rural training “more expensive” than traditional training? -added administrative costs of coordinating outpatient rotations at multiple sites. Add a footer

8 Goals of advocacy 1) Get your big idea voted into law!
2) Build relationships for future projects. And if you are becoming more interested in advocacy… Add a footer
