Warm Up 11/28 There are FOUR scenes in Act III. Independently list the main actions for each scene. Use the quick reminder of each scene, indicated below, to help you if necessary (if you really need help, grab a copy of the script). Scene 1: Ophelia and Hamlet talk. Scene 2: They all watch a play. Scene 3: Hamlet sneaks into Claudius’s bedroom. Scene 4: Gertrude gets told.

Task During Film Follow one character (Choose any, but it might be interesting to choose the character you portrayed and examine their portrayal in the film). What are their main actions in Act III? Indicate why you chose each one. What is this character’s main motivations for doing what they are doing? List AT LEAST three reasons for why they do what they do. Make a prediction about what you think will happen with this character in Act IV. Use everything you know, including the tragic structure that Shakespeare implemented.

Learning Targets I can watch Branagh’s film production of Act III in order to be exposed to the Shakespearean language used throughout the act, and also to cement my comprehension of the Act itself. I can closely follow a character’s portrayal in the film version of Hamlet in order to develop a stronger depth of understanding for that character’s motivation.
