4 4.0.0 Fabricating Gaskets Most gaskets may be purchased.
If a gasket is needed before it can be delivered, Or, if it cost is a factor: Gaskets may be cut easily on the shop floor.

5 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket Specific details for
General layout procedures: These steps detail laying out the outside and inside diameters and the bolt circle. Note that these steps are the standard procedures to start making any gasket.

6 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket General Layout Procedures Step 1:
Select the proper gasket material. Step 2: Measure the inside diameter of the flange. Measure the outside diameter of the flange. Measure the diameter of the BOLT CIRCLE.

7 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket Explanation of Bolt Circle:
The bolt circle is the imaginary circle that is concentric with the flange diameters and passes through the centers of the bolt holes. The most accurate method of measuring the bolt circle is to: Measure from the outside edge of one hole to the inside edge of the hole that is directly across from the first hole. Q13

8 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket Bolt Circle:

9 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket Step 3: Step 4:
Divide each diameter by 2 to determine the radius of each circle. Step 4: Draw a line horizontally (left to right) across the center of the gasket material. Draw a point on the line in the center of the gasket material. This point is the “Center Mark”. You do not have to be exactly in the center of the gasket; just close to it.

10 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket Step 4:

11 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket Step 5: Step 6:
Set compass to the dimension of the outside radius of the flange. Step 6: Set the compass point on the center mark. Draw a circle. This circle is the outside diameter of the flange.

12 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket Step 6:

13 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket Step 7: Step 8:
Set compass to the dimension of the inside radius of the flange. Step 8: Set the compass point on the center mark. Draw a circle. This circle is the inside diameter of the flange.

14 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket Step 8:

15 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket Step 9: Step 10:
Set compass to the dimension of the bolt circle radius of the flange. Step 10: Set the compass point on the center mark. Draw a circle. This circle is the bolt circle diameter of the flange.

16 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket Step 10: Outside Diameter Bolt Circle
Inside Diameter

17 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket Step 11: Step 12:
Set compass to a dimension that is just less than the outside diameter of the flange. Step 12: Set the compass point on the left-side intersection of the horizontal line and the outside diameter of the flange. Draw an arc above and below the outside diameter of the flange.

18 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket Step 12:

19 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket Step 13: Step 14:
Keep the compass set to the same dimension. This is very important to accurately bisect the angle. Step 14: Set the compass point on the right-side intersection of the horizontal line and the outside diameter of the flange. Draw an arc above and below the outside diameter of the flange.

20 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket Step 14:

21 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket Step 15:
Note that the two top arcs intersect. Note that the two bottom arcs intersect. Draw a vertical (up and down) line from the top intersection of the arcs to the bottom intersection of the arcs. If you have accurately bisected the angle, this line will precisely pass through the original center mark. If not, erase arcs and start over.

22 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket Step 15:

23 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket Step 16: To draw the bolt hole:
Measure the diameter of the bolt hole on the flange. Divide by 2 to obtain the radius. Set compass to this radius. Side Note: As a general rule, flange bolt holes will be 1/8” larger than the nominal diameter of the bolt.

24 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket Step 17:
This step details the layout of the bolt holes. 17-2B is step 17 for a 2-bolt (2B) flange. 17-4B is step 17 for a 4-bolt (4B) flange. 17-6B is step 17 for a 6-bolt (6B) flange. And so on.

If you have a protractor, you can layout an odd-number (3,5,7, etc.) bolt pattern: Divide 360 by the number of bolt holes to obtain the angle between each hole. 360 / 3 = 120 degrees 360 / 5 = 72 degrees 360 / 7 = 51.4 degrees 360 / 9 = 40 degrees There are several 3-hole flanges; but, as a general rule, odd- numbered bolt holes, over 3, are not used on flanges. Q14

77 4.1.0 Laying Out A New Gasket Step 17–Odd: 5-Bolt Flange 144 72
360/5=72 Holes are 72* apart
