Review… What do these cell parts do?
Cell wall? Cell membrane? Mitochondria? Cytoplasm? Vacuole? Chloroplast? Nucleus?

Organization inside your body…
Cells Tissues Organs Organ systems ORGANISM!

DNA Study Pack #5
5
Today’s Goal… I can describe the structure and function of DNA.
6
Inside the Nucleus The nucleus controls the activities of the cell
The nucleus contains chromosomes that are made up of a chemical called DNA
7
Why is DNA important? DNA controls how the organism will look and function Controls the color of your hair The shape of your ears Your blood type How you digest the food you eat DNA is like the blueprint for the body The information DNA contains is called genetic information
8
Structure of DNA Figure 2, Page 591 It looks like a twisted ladder
9
Structure of DNA The two sides of the ladder form the “backbone” of the DNA molecule The sides support the steps of the ladder that contain all the genetic information
10
Structure of DNA The steps are made up of a pair of chemicals called bases There are only four bases and they pair up in certain ways
11
The Secret of DNA A DNA ladder contains billions of steps
Bases can be arranged in many different ways This forms a code that tells the cell what substances to make, when to make them, and how to make them The DNA of all living organisms is different (except for identical twins)
