Freed all slaves and made slavery illegal It was ratified in January of 1865

3 John Wilkes Booth John Wilkes Booth was a very well known actor, famous for being handsome His initial plan was to capture Lincoln and hold him for random When this failed, he planned the assassination The plan was to kill not just Lincoln, but also Ulysses S Grant, the Secretary of State William Seward, and Vice President Andrew Johnson

On April 14th, 1865, Booth walked into the theater and shot Lincoln in the back of the head He then jumped from the balcony and shouted “sic semper tyrannis!” –thus always to tyrants On his jump he broke his leg but was able to escape for a time before being caught and killed

Henry Rathbone was stabbed after lunging at Booth Lincoln was taken across the street to a house where he dies the next morning “The cause of such mighty changes in the world’s history as we may perhaps never realize.” –Edward Curtis

Lewis Powell stabbed and almost killed the Secretary of State, Seward The man who was supposed to kill Johnson got cold feet at the last minute and didn’t do it Mary Surratt was the very first woman executed by the United States for her role in the Lincoln assassination
