2 Fall 2016 Exam 16. c. Because water is held in the straw, the pressure in the straw must be less than the atmospheric pressure. Moles of gas inside the straw and temperature remains constant. Water leaving the straw caused gas volume inside the straw to increase, decreasing the pressure inside the straw. This meant that atmospheric pressure was able to work against gravity acting on water in the straw and the pressure inside the straw pushing down on the water. 17. a atm b. Volume will increase because the pressure inside is greater than outside atmospheric pressure. c. Assume outside atmospheric pressure is 1.0 atm…then V2 = 1.54 L. d. Gases behave ideally under high temperature, low pressure, and high volume. This decreases the likelihood that the gas particles will come in contact with each other and attract.
