Academic Vocabulary First things first: I will give you a quick DEFINITION for “genre” a type of art (or artistic endeavor) having a characteristic form or technique Movies, books, plays, music, art, etc. Types of Art: Characteristic (“typical”) form: What do things in this genre have in common or share? 2

Every Student will… 1) Identify whether a text is a narrative or informational by identifying the key elements of short passages 7

How can you identify a Text’s genre
First – identify if the story is “Fiction or “Non-Fiction” Text Is the story 100% based on real life? If yes If no – part is imaginary Non-fiction (Expository) Poetry Fiction (Narrative) the text trying to inform you with information that is 100% true to life the text is trying to tell you a story where at least part of the story is fake or imaginary 8

Now that we’ve gone over the different types of texts, we will identify them…
As you identify the genre you must also write down WHY you guessed this genre…What were the CLUES in the text? Genre: Clues:

POETRY Narrative, Informational, or Poetry
(you can be more specific after this) Genre: POETRY Clues: Has lines instead of sentences Has stanzas instead of paragraphs The author’s purpose is to ENTERTAIN Often has rhymes (but this isn’t always true) Often is shorter (but this isn’t always true)

Narrative, Expository, Reference Source, or Poetry
Genre: Informational – Reference Clues: Provides specific information that is fact based rather than opinion based. Not read Cover to Cover No plot elements The Author’s Purpose is to INFORM

Genre: Narrative Text Clues:… It’s a story!! Characters Setting Plot Elements (Conflict, Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, and Resolution) Theme: What is the reader supposed to learn? Style/Tone Dialogue Usually Chronological

Genre: Expository Text Clues:… 100% based on real life Often has real life pictures Often headings, titles, and key words Author’s Purpose is to INFORM or PERSUADE about a topic.

Create it Each group will receive a book – They must create a poster to: Identify the genre of the book (Narrative, Expository, or Poetry) Write down ALL the clues you can find in the book that tell you what the genre is…Feel free to be specific (Teacher will model…) Genre: Clues: 16

For example: historical fiction or the Magic School Bus
Are there gray areas between these genres? Yes! For example: historical fiction or the Magic School Bus But most of the text you read does not fall into this gray area. Almost all text can be easily categorized as either Informational or Narrative 17

Why are these categories useful?
If you can name a text’s genre, you are better able to choose a THINKING STRATEGY to decode the text. Example: Austin passed the ball to Joey who was alone under the basket. Joey jumped up and slammed the ball into the hoop. Joey made it look easy. Austin had always been in awe of his brother. Joey was the best at everything. Genre: Searchlight Questions: Narrative Who are the characters? Traits? What is the conflict? What is the theme? 18

Why are these categories useful?
If you can name a text’s genre, you are better able to choose a THINKING STRATEGY to decode the text. Example: These searchlight questions change when the genre is an Informational or Expository Text instead of a Narrative Focus this week! Genre: Searchlight Questions: 19

Why is it crucial that you acquire the skills to break down informational text?
Provides essential information, from: - How to fix something (directions) - Major Political Events - Recent Research about our world Most students struggle more with reading informational text compared to narrative text So the first step is to recognize an Informational Text… - I will show some images on the board. Please determine if these texts are Informational or Narratives… Then you must explain why in the thought bubble on your page… 20
