Organic Chemistry
2
What is “organic” chemistry?
organic – carbon compound Includes the substances of “life” found in your body Hydrocarbons – compounds made of H + C Saturated – Carbons have all single bonds Fats that are solids at room temp. Unsaturated – Carbons have double and/or triple bonds Fats that are liquids at room temp.
3
Info about Carbon always forms 4 bonds very stable compounds Examples:
because it has 4 valence electrons very stable compounds Examples: Pharmaceuticals (aspirin, vitamins, insulin) Petrochemicals (propane, butane, & octane) AKA: hydrocarbons

SOL Released Question
5
Carbon Chains Suffix -ane single bonds -ene double bond -yne triple bond Prefix Meth Eth Prop But Pent Hex Hept Oct
6
Saturated vs. Unsaturated Carbon Chains
7
Saturated vs. Unsaturated
8
Saturated Unsaturated Single bonds to carbon
Double or triple bond to carbon

SOL Released Question
13
An example of carbon chains.
Polymers An example of carbon chains.
15
Natural Polymers Carbohydrates Nucleic Acids DNA RNA Proteins
16
RNA DNA Nucleic acid polymers
17
Proteins are polymers of amino acids
18
Synthetic Polymers All plastics monomer + monomer = polymer
Made from petroleum Long chains of carbon monomers monomer + monomer = polymer “polymerization reaction”
19
Examples of Synthetic Polymers
Nylon Polyester Teflon Kevlar Plastics!!

25
Build the following: 1,3-hexene and 3,5-hexene
Compare the two structures. Ethanoic acid and Ethanal 2,3-pentanol Methane 2-butanone Is the following an accurate representation? 4-pentyne Red = oxygen white = hydrogen Black = carbon
26
Build the following: Ethanoic acid and Ethanal 2,3-pentanol 2-butanone
Compare the two structures. 2,3-pentanol What orientation will the molecule spend most of its time in? 2-butanone Is the following an accurate representation? 4-pentyne How does the triple bond affect the structure? Red = oxygen white = hydrogen Black = carbon
27
Build the following: Butane Methane 1,3-pentene Ethyne
white = hydrogen Black = carbon
