Definition of Primary Source
A document or physical object that was created during the time period being studied Can you think of any examples?

Definition of Secondary Source
Accounts of the past created by people who are not first-hand witnesses of the event. This type of source offers an analysis or restatement of primary sources. Can you think of any examples?

Time and Place Rule Used to judge the quality of a primary source
“The closer in time and place a source and its creator were to the actual event, the better the source will be”

Which is more reliable? Accounts of the event, created after the event occurred, by people who did not participate or witness it but used interviews or evidence from the time of the event Accounts of the event created at the time it occurred by firsthand observers and participants Direct Traces of the event Accounts of the event create after the event by firsthand observers and participants

Bias Rule Every source has bias in some way
Every piece of evidence and every source must be read or viewed skeptically and critically The creator’s point of view must be considered Each piece of evidence and source must be cross-checked and compared with related sources and pieces of evidence
