6 Tobacco The green leaves of the tobacco plant; dried and prepared for smoking or ingestion The leading cause of premature death in the United States

7 Nicotine An addictive, or habit-forming, drug found in tobacco
Your body wants more of it once it’s in your system and you crave it

8 Tar A thick, dark liquid that forms when tobacco burns
It coats the airways and the linings of the lungs and lungs can become diseased

9 Carbon Monoxide Colorless, odorless, poisonous gas produced when tobacco burns Damages the brain and the heart by reducing the amount of oxygen available to these organs

Cyanide – poison Formaldehyde – causes nasal cancer Methyl ethyl ketone- harms the nervous system There are over 4000!!

11 Cigarettes Contain shredded tobacco leaves; some have filters
Filters do not remove enough chemicals to make cigarettes less dangerous Flavored cigarettes have more chemicals than regular ones

Cigar smoke has 90 times more of the cancer-causing chemicals found in cigarette smoke More likely to develop mouth, tongue, or lip cancer

13 Smokeless Tobacco Comes in two forms: 1.Chewing tobacco- “dip” 2. Snuff – can be sniffed or chewed Chemicals do not get into lungs They are held in the mouth and absorbed in the tissues and the blood stream

14 Tobaccos affect on: Respiratory System – damages the air sacs in the lungs and can lead to lung disease Digestive System – increase the risk of cavities and gum disease, dulls the taste buds, and causes cancers of the mouth, throat, stomach, esophagus

15 Tobacco affects on: Nervous System – Reduces the flow of oxygen to the brain which leads to strokes Excretory System – Doubles the risk of bladder cancer

16 Tobacco affects on: Circulatory System – linked to heart disease, increases chances of a heart attack, raises blood pressure and heart rate

Smokers get sick more often Your skin, breath, hair and clothes smell like smoke Causes your skin on fingers to turn yellow Changes your voice Causes premature wrinkles

Emphysema – a disease that results in the destruction of the alveoli in the lungs

23 Tolerance The body’s need for larger and larger amounts of a drug to produce the same effect The bodies need for nicotine causes a person to crave more tobacco products

Companies may package their cigarettes in bright colors or pay celebrities to advertise their products

Smoking costs Americans more than $150 billion a year Smoking causes 445 new cases of lung cancer a day

Can’t place any advertisements within 1000 feet of schools or playgrounds Can’t make or sell hats, t-shirts, or other items with logos on them No radio or tv commercials

29 Passive Smokers Nonsmokers who breath in secondhand smoke

30 Tobacco Smoke Mainstream smoke- The smoke that is inhaled and then exhaled by a smoker Sidestream smoke – smoke that comes from the burning end of a cigarette, pipe, or cigar

Smoking is outlawed on airplanes Cannot smoke in buildings or restaurants Can’t smoke within 1000 feet of a school Packages must have clear warning labels on them Smokers insurance is more expensive

Stopping all use of tobacco products immediately Withdrawal symptoms can last up to 6 months Doesn’t always work the first time so keep trying!!

Replacing nicotine with nicotine substitutes such as nicotine gum or nicotine patches

37 TIPS FOR QUITTING Make a list of reasons why you quit
Throw away all tobacco products and ashtrays Change little things to your daily routine like sit in a different seat at dinner Tell family and friends to help support you Avoid being around people who use tobacco Put aside the money you save and buy a present Exercise or call a friend to take your mind off smoking
