After World War II, Germany and its capital, Berlin, were split into four zones.

West Germany and West Berlin were controlled by democratic nations, while East Germany and East Berlin were controlled by the Soviet Union.

Beginning in 1948, the Soviet Union tried to block West Berlin from receiving aid from democratic nations.

In response, democratic nations began airlifting supplies to West Berlin and the Soviet Union eventually lifted its blockade by 1949. Berlin airlift (1948 – 1949)

However, the Soviet Union constructed the Berlin Wall in 1961 to separate East Berlin from West Berlin . . . Berlin Wall (1961 – 1990)

. . . and to keep East Germans from escaping to West Berlin.

In 1956 and in 1968, the Soviet Union faced revolutions against communism in the satellite nations of Hungary and Czechoslovakia.

In response, the Soviet Union invaded and occupied these nations in order to maintain its control over Eastern Europe.
