Westerners in the territories needed a firm voice to oppose slavery 1854 in Michigan, the Republican Party is formed and ready to stand its ground by 1856 Most Republicans wanted to keep slavery from spreading Some were abolitionists hoping to end slavery in the south Republican Candidate: John C. Frémont VS Democrat Candidate: James Buchanan WINNER: James Buchanan

3 Fun Facts 1. The Republican Party is the 2nd oldest political party in the United States. It is often referred to as the GOP or “Grand Old Party” 2. The Whigs, Free-Soilers, and Know-Nothing Parties will all be dissolved into the Republican Party by 1860 3. The GOP will dominate Presidential Elections until 1929, when FDR is elected (About 70 Years)

Lincoln Challenges Douglass to a Debate 7 Debates Total Lincoln was NOT an Abolitionist Opposed Slavery in U.S Territories Believed Slaves deserved the same rights that are stated in the Declaration of Independence-Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness Douglas Wins, but Lincoln becomes nationally known
