FACTS Unintentional injury is the #1 killer of children age 14 and younger in the U.S. Among children ages 14 and under, it is estimated that 40% of deaths and 50% of nonfatal unintentional injuries occur in and around the home 9,000 families lose a child each year due to a preventable injury 90% of these injuries could be prevented!

3 What is PTP? Kiwanis CNH Foundation established the Pediatric Trauma Program in 1994 Addresses the need for education/training of injury prevention Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death (40%) among children under the age of 15 Common causes: bike crashes, improper child safety seats, domestic dangers, playground injuries and drowning Injuries can result from a lack of proper equipment Lack of education about child safety makes the treatment more difficult PTP is the CNH Foundation’s major focus

4 Partner Hospitals The Foundation partners with hospitals around our district to reduce injuries Hospitals in: San Diego Oakland Madera Reno Honolulu Loma Linda

5 Programs and Projects PTP creates and funds programs to:
Create or expand community outreach programs which seek to prevent and/or treat pediatric trauma - defined as sudden, unintentional physical injury; Train doctors and nurses in advanced pediatric courses; and Purchase pediatric medical equipment such as immobilization boards, incubators, and blood pressure gauges

6 Financial Distribution
Donations for PTP are spent in a few major areas: Grants to Kiwanis and SLP clubs Grants to our partner hospitals- - used to fund and create safety programs to teach staff to specialize in child care & inform the public PTP safety items & equipment- such as bicycle helmets and protective gear, electric outlet covers, and child ID kits

7 Sample Events Help prevent unintentional injuries by sponsoring a service project or a fundraiser. Topics and examples include . . . Bicycle Safety Child Abuse Prevention Child Passenger Safety Fire/Burn Prevention First Aid and CPR Home Safety Playground Safety Poison Prevention PTP Dolls Water Safety Car washes Pie a Key Clubber Holiday grams PTP dares for donations Restaurant fundraisers Talent shows Awake-A-Thons Bake Sales Dances Movie Nights

8 CNH District Goal Host fundraisers, raise donations for PTP, and help CNH Key Club reach their district goal of: $250,000

9 Pediatric Trauma Program Grants
> What We do > Grantmaking Awards > Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) Grants Established to assist SLP clubs in financing PTP service projects on a start up basis Grants are for new PTP service projects only Grant funding of up to $500/project

10 Steps to Apply Complete the SLP - PTP grant application and include the following: An estimate of service hours committed to the project Date when funds are required A copy of the club’s current year Community Service Budget (if available) A project budget including club funds committed, “in-kind” donations, and other sources of outside funding

11 Grant Application Considerations
BEE sure to BEE descriptive about the service project you need money for Make sure to include how this project will make a positive impact Super important to show proof of your club budget Make sure your club approves of you going for this grant

12 How to Donate Raise the money!
Have an adult handle the money and put it into the club bank account, school bookkeeper, or parents bank account Write a check (an adult should be writing!)
