Conceptual plan for the 2017 El Paso Ozone Transport Field Study for the El Paso MPO Dave DuBois New Mexico State University Presented to the 67th Joint Advisory Committee meeting September 22, 2016
2
Overview Who: New Mexico State University & St. Edwards University
What: Design and conduct a program to collect ozone for the characterization and understanding of physico-chemical processes involved in the formation and destruction of tropospheric ozone in El Paso Funded by TCEQ When: Summer 2017
3
Project Goal To characterize ozone in and over El Paso through an intensive observation and monitoring study during the summer of 2017
4
Monthly Ozone Concentrations
Mean Highest mean monthly concentrations in AMJ but maximum highest in JAS High mean AMJ may indicate regionally transported contributions High maximum JAS can indicate local sources, nighttime titration Maximum
5
2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 “high” above defined as the 8-hr concentrations above 80th percentile
6
Objectives Characterize ozone and meteorology aloft during episodes and throughout the ozone season weekly ozonesondes and during episodes Supplement existing surface ozone and meteorological monitoring network 2B Technology ozone sensors and portable weather stations
7
Ozonesonde Collects vertical profile of weather and ozone from ground to stratosphere Ozone sensor connected to radiosonde
8
Objectives Assess vertical mixing of ozone from the free troposphere into the planetary boundary layer and assess/describe the meteorological conditions associated with this mixing Assess the representativeness of the collected ozonesonde data set using satellite data and other sources Identify temporal patterns and similarities and differences among the ozone monitoring sites
9
Objectives Identify meteorological patterns and investigate the spatio-temporal variation of ozone and its precursors Investigate the impact of smoke events using a combination of satellite remote sensing products and atmospheric transport models Determine the potential for and perform a source attribution analysis using data collected as part of this study
10
Monitoring Locations Augment existing network “backbone” with addition met and ozone sensors Network design to help find peaks, transport patterns, and for specific receptors
11
Current Status Completing scope of work, send to MPO
Draft complete monitoring study and QA plan Specifying monitoring technology Recruiting students for summer 2017 Schedule training for spring 2017
12
For the JAC Support for the study and participants
Cooperation and assistance in site selection and permitting Dissemination of the information gleaned from this study
