1 Meeting to share age related expectations. Year group: 3

2 Feedback from parents has informed us that parents would find it helpful to know more about the New Curriculum (2013) and the year group expectations. The year group expectations are what is expected by the END of the year. We will focus on Reading, Writing, Maths and Science and how you can help. Parents can support with learning in many ways that are fun and related to everyday life. We will also be running maths workshops in January.

3 Reading: your support with reading makes a significant difference.
At school we: At home you could: Work out unknown words using phonics, blending, chunking and stretching and other strategies taught previously. Teach words – certain, famous, address, fruit, promise, strength, often… Develop an enjoyment of reading – range of books Play snap with high frequency words, spot the words in the books, count the words. Talk about the book and if you ask questions keep enjoyment as a priority (useful question sheet.) Take turns to read as you can model the expression. Talk about how books can be read differently…fiction and non-fiction Encourage your child to express an opinion about books.

4 Reading: your support with reading makes a significant difference.
At school we: At home you could: In the guided reading sessions we focus on the plot, understanding the text. We encourage reading with expression through using punctuation correctly. We predict what might happen from details stated and implied. Encourage the children to question each other and their viewpoint on the text. Locate information using the contents and index . Question your child when reading. Identify parts of the sentence…Is it an adjective? ‘It was a terrible book.’ Find an adverb…’He ate his breakfast quickly.’ “What does _____ mean?” - Use dictionaries to check meanings of words.

5 How you can help with spelling at home
Writing includes: spelling, handwriting, composition, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation. Ways we teach spelling at school How you can help with spelling at home We use a word log book where children can have a go at spelling unknown words. Word lists for Year 3 (see orange handout.) We play games with these words. (show photo). Use the first 2/3 letters of a word to check its spelling in a dictionary. Use taught spelling strategies (see A3 hand-out) e.g. pyramid words. Write words on post-its and display around the house! Sing the words…or put a rhythm to the letters. Notice words in books. Does it look right? Have 2 or 3 goes to select correct or closest version. Check in a dictionary.

6 Handwriting: Currently writing in pencil, during the year we may move onto pen. Children should be using joined handwriting throughout independent writing. We will continue to teach handwriting with the aim of increasing fluency, this then supports composition and spelling. We use Letter-join scheme (See light blue handout for joins) Encourage children to join when practising spellings. Encourage clear and joined handwriting in homework.

7 Composition: At home you could: At school we:
Encourage writing for different purposes e.g. shopping list, postcards, letters, diary, messages, book reviews/blurbs, s. Use the computer to write. Encourage use of a dictionary. Don’t correct every word. Remind to join handwriting. Praise good ideas and self-checking. Get children to read back their own work. Read what your child has written and ask if it makes sense. Remind children that they are an author – SOMEONE IS GOING TO READ THEIR WORK! Encourage pupils to plan their writing. We will do a lot of planning on pieces of paper and making notes. Children have their English jotters which they will use during lessons to take notes. Compose and rehearse sentences orally before writing. Could you say it in a different way to make it sound better for the reader? Read sentences back to check for corrections. We link writing to drama and use exciting texts.

8 Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation:
Terminology that children will be taught and expected to use in school: adverb, preposition, conjunction, word family, prefix, clause, direct speech, consonant, vowel, inverted commas (or ‘speech marks’), determiner, pronoun, possessive pronoun, adverbial. (see red hand-out for explanations) These will be covered during Years 3 and 4 as the curriculum is grouped into 2 year groups. Years 3 and 4 are sometimes referred to as Lower KS2. The writing judgements for 2017 onwards allow us to use a more balanced approach to enable us to give children credit for writing with audience awareness.

9 Year 3 expectations: Use of capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks to demarcate sentences Commas to separate items in a list Apostrophes to mark where letters are missing in spelling for example don’t, can’t . Also to mark singular possession in nouns for example, the girl’s name Using commas after fronted adverbials e.g. Running quickly down the street, the boy was in time for the bus. Indicating possession by using a possessive apostrophe with plural nouns e.g. My parents’ car. Using and punctuating direct speech e.g. "One of the cows is going to have a calf," said the farmer to his wife.

10 English Homework 1 piece of English homework per week (this may be linked to our science or topic work.) In Year 3 each child will have one Guided Reading session per week in which they may receive a homework task to be completed for the following session. This task will be recorded in their planner. Children will also have a choosing book. These choosing books can be changed daily. It is the children's responsibility to change their choosing books as and when they need to do so.

11 Mathematics Number: Place value
Count from 0 in multiples of 4, 8, 50 and 100; find 10 or 100 more or less than a given number. Recognise the place value of each digit in a three-digit number (hundreds, tens, ones). Compare and order numbers up to 1000. Identify, represent and estimate numbers using different representations. Read and write numbers up to 1000 in numerals and in words. Solve number problems and practical problems involving these ideas.

12 Number: Addition and Subtraction
Add and subtract numbers mentally, including: A three-digit number and ones A three-digit number and tens A three-digit number and hundreds Estimate the answer to a calculation and use inverse operations to check answers. Solve problems, including missing number problems, using number facts, place value, and more complex addition and subtraction. Add and subtract numbers with up to three digits, using formal written methods of columnar addition and subtraction.

13 Number: Multiplication and Division
Recall and use multiplication and division facts for 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables Knowing your times tables isn't knowing them so you have to count through to work out an answer. Knowing your times tables is knowing them out of order and backwards so you can answer a question thrown at you on the spot. Write and calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division using the multiplication tables that they know, including for two-digit numbers times one-digit numbers, using mental methods and progressing to formal written methods. Solve problems, including missing number problems, involving multiplication and division.

14 Number: Fractions Count up and down in tenths; recognise that tenths arise from dividing an object into 10 equal parts and in dividing one-digit numbers or quantities by 10. Recognise, find and write fractions of a discrete set of objects: unit fractions and non-unit fractions with small denominators. Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator within one whole (for example, 5/7 + 1/7 = 6/7). Compare and order unit fractions, and fractions with the same denominators.

15 Measurement and Geometry Year 3 and 4
Measure, compare, add and subtract: lengths (m/cm/mm); mass (kg/g): volume/capacity (l/ml). Excellent way of helping at home with this is cooking. Measure the perimeter of simple 2D shapes. Add and subtract amounts of money to give change using both £ and p in practical contexts. Children buy things in the shop using money. Tell and write the time from an analogue clock, including using Roman numerals from I to XII, and 12-hour and 24-hour clocks. Know the number of seconds in a minute, minutes in an hour, days in a month, months in a year, days in a year and leap year. Geometry Draw 2D shapes and make 3D shapes using modelling materials; recognise 2D shapes in different orientations and describe them. Recognise angles as a property of shape or a description of a turn. Identify right angles, recognise that two right angles make a half-turn, three make three quarters of a turn and four complete turn; identify whether angles are greater than or less than a right angle. Identify horizontal and vertical lines and pairs or perpendicular and parallel lines.

16 Maths Homework Maths homework will be given on a Friday for the following Wednesday. The tasks are differentiated and linked to recent learning. The aim is to practise or consolidate skills. Often the focus will be to apply learning to problems. Times Tables will feature regularly and we will aim at quick, confident and accurate recall.

17 Marking Editing work Messages in books Individualised feedback
Focus for work and success criteria

18 Science The following areas will be covered in Year 3. Each subject area will cover a half term. Animals including Humans Forces and Magnets Rocks SRE Drugs and Alcohol Plants Light

19 Website and Class Dojo…
Please check the website for termly overview, routines, updates, photos etc… Please sign up to Class Dojo to keep up-to-date with what we are doing in class and for other reminders/ messages. We will not use Class Dojo for Pupil Story. The main reason for introducing Class Dojo at Belgrave is for staff to upload photographs and for you to hear important announcements and updates.
