Showing Respect for others
Common Courtesy Showing Respect for others
2
Common Courtesy definition
Politeness that people can usually be expected to show. “He didn’t even have the common courtesy to say goodbye when he left.” Some people think our society is becoming less and less courteous. Being courteous and respectful helps you get along with others and helps make sure you have positive interactions. Here are some tips to help you be more courteous:
3
Courteous Words and voices
Use appropriate, respectful words when talking to others. Avoid swearing, name-calling, hurtful teasing, and put-downs. Remember to use good manners when speaking to others. “Please,” “Thank you,” and “Excuse me” go a long way. Speak in an appropriate tone of voice. Yelling and loud talking disrupt others from working and learning.

Courteous behaviors Cell phones and other electronic devices may only be used in class WITH teacher permission. Otherwise, put them away so you can focus on your work. Cell phones are not a substitute for actual human contact. It’s always OK to hold a door open for someone walking in or out behind you--especially if their hands are full. It’s always OK to say “Please” and “Thank you” when you need something or something is given to you--even of it’s not exactly what you wanted. Be grateful that someone is thinking of you.

More courteous behaviors
Speaking of “please”, it’s always OK to say please when you are asking for something from another person. Even if it’s something small like borrowing a pencil or asking a teacher permission to use the restroom during class. It’s not OK to interrupt someone when they are talking, especially teachers when they are teaching or giving instructions. (Unless it is a true emergency.) It’s always a good idea to actively listen when someone is talking to you.

Wait, there’s more! Always remember that just because you think it, it doesn’t mean you have to say it. Keeping mean thoughts and comments to yourself is a sign of maturity, kindness, and respect. It’s not OK to take pictures or video of people without their permission. It’s also not OK to alter the picture and post it on social media. If you need to use the restroom during class, quietly ask your teacher for permission. Nobody needs to know what you are going to do in the restroom.
