Curriculum for Excellence –Overview
Curriculum for Excellence identifies two key stages in secondary – the broad general education (BGE) and the Senior Phase. The BGE covers S1 – S3 and the Senior Phase from S4 - S6.
Instead of choosing two year courses at the end of S2 (Standard Grade/’O’ Grade) all pupils continue to experience a broad range of curricular areas until the end of third year, at which point they select the subjects they wish to study in fourth year.

Thirty three periods in total each week.
All pupils study Maths & English for four periods per week (8).
All pupils study PE for two periods per week (2).
All pupils study RE and PSE for one period per week each (2).
Pupils choose seven subjects, each for three periods per week (21).

General Points
Pupils must select a first and second choice in each column.
The form must be signed by a parent/carer and must include the pupil’s name on the form.
The form should be returned to the pupil’s guidance teacher who will check the form and sign it. Pupils must not hand in the form until they have met with their guidance teacher.
The deadline is Thursday 23rd February 2018.

In More Detail – Modern Languages
All pupils have an entitlement to follow a modern foreign language until the end of the BGE.
Both French and Spanish can be selected. To do so Spanish must be selected in the personalisation 2 column.
A small number of pupils will work in a support group but still cover some French topics.

Pupils can now continue three sciences until the end of S3. (NB three sciences at Higher in a single sitting is not required for entry to medicine/veterinary medicine/dentistry.)
In such cases Chemistry must be selected in the Personalisation 2 column.

Wider achievement involves activities that allow pupils to work towards a range of qualifications: Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, Leadership, Saltire Award & Youth Achievement/Dynamic Youth Awards - all recognised for university & college entry, and by employers.
A course called Achieve built around activities planned by the Prince’s Trust is offered in this column. It is targeted at pupils at risk of failing to achieve qualifications in S4 and will be offered to individuals after discussion with pupil support.
