1 A Victim of the Disease:
Male or Female?

2 “Who is more likely to be infected with AIDS, males or females?”
Hypothesis “Who is more likely to be infected with AIDS, males or females?”

3 Background Info Aids is what is known as the “acquired immunodeficiency syndrome” First recognized in 1981 In Canada there are approx. 49,800 people living with HIV/AIDS 18,106 AIDS cases have been reported to the CIDPC (center for infectious disease prevention & control)

4 Raw Data

5 Raw Data Cont'd

6 Single Variable Analysis

7 Single Variable Analysis
Conclusion: Single Variable Analysis The data represented in the previous graphs, illustrates the number of infected males, females and a combination of the two in each age group. However, the data does not tell us how these people became infected with the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. In the next section I will explore another set of data that examines four different exposure categories of how people may have contracted this disease.

8 Multivariable Analysis

9 Multivariable Analysis
Conclusion: Multivariable Analysis A positive linear relationship exists between all 4-exposure category data sets. As expected a true relationship was found in the sexual contact exposure category with males and females. Majority of people become infected with aids through sexual contact. There was also a strong linear relationship in the IDU category. In the recipients of blood exposure category there must also be some kind of infection connection with males in conjunction with females. In the no identified risk category there doesn’t seem to be a strong connection.

10 Distributions

11 Normal Distributions

12 Analysis To determine a normal distribution I figured out the z-scores and plotted the mean and the 2 closest standard deviations from it. From the above tables we are able to find the probability of any male or female contracting aids. Conclusion The probability for either sex, no matter the age, can be determined by following this procedure:

13 A Probability Example:
What is the probability of a male aged 27 contracting aids? Step 1: I looked at the z-scores, for males aged 27, on the above table. Step 2: I looked on page 606 in Mathematics of Data Management textbook and found the z-score, multiplied it by 100 and got 1.36%. Therefore, a male aged 27 has a probability of 1.36% of contracting aids. Same procedure to find the probability of a female aged 27. (12.5%)

14 Conclusion on Hypothesis
The AIDS virus is a disease, which almost anyone can contract. Most people believe that you must come in contact sexually with an infected person, but as I illustrated, that is not always the case. Sharing needles, work exposure and simply getting a blood transfusion are all ways in which this disease can be transmitted. In closing, for Canadian residents, it is more likely for a male to contract this deadly disease in comparison to a female.
