1 DENSITY Density is defined as mass per unit volume. It is a measure of how tightly packed and how heavy the molecules or atoms are in an object. NOTES Density is the amount of matter within a certain volume.

2 Density (D) = mass (M) Volume (V)
SI unit of density is kg/m3 Other units: kg/l or g/cm3 and g/ml The density of water is 1000 kg/m3, 1.0 g/cm3 or 1 kg/litre

3 Find the mass of the object
Find the volume of the object Divide : Density = Mass / Volume SHOW YOUR WORKING: If the mass of an object is 35 grams and it takes up 7 cm3 of space, calculate the density. A sample of ethanol has a volume of 240 cm3. Its mass is found to be g. What is the density of ethanol? The mass of 5m3 of copper is 44800kg. Work out the density of the copper.

4 Practical Measure a variety of objects and calculate their densities.
Use some objects that you can calculate their volume by using a ruler and some that you have to use a measuring cylinder to calculate their volume. Set up a results table that names the object, gives its mass, volume and density. Don’t forget to put the units at the top of the columns.
