Density -density is the amount of stuff in a given volume; it is symbolized as ρ -it is mass per volume; note that units can be virtually any mass or volume ex: mass – g, kg, mg, etc volume – mL, L, cm3, mm3
2
-Density is an intrinsic property, meaning that it does not depend on the amount of substance you have -density doesn’t change for a given substance; it has been used to verify the purity of gold -extrinsic properties are ones that do depend on how much you have ex: mass, volume, and temperature
3
-when two substances of different density are combined, the one with greater density will sink to the bottom while the other will “float” to the top

Density Practice Answer the following questions:
1) A piece of wood has a mass of 35 grams. If its volume is 7 cm3, What is its density? 2) The density of a substance is 7.8 g/cm3. What volume does 39 grams of it take up? 3) The density of water is 1 g/ml. What mass does 30 ml of water have?
