Early Allied Victories

3 Pushing the Axis Back At Casablanca Conference(1/43), FDR & Churchill agree to unmercifully bomb Germany & attack through “soft underbelly” – Italy The Invasion of Italy: Ike leads invasion in 7/1943…by 9/1943, Italy surrenders (Nazis continue fighting in Italy until 5/1945) At Tehran Conference(12/43), Big 3 decide USSR from East, Allies from West in 1944, Division of Germany after war, USSR will declare war on Japan 3 mos. after Germany surrenders, and creation of int’l peace-keeping org.

June 6, ships, 150,000 men, 23,000 paratroopers, 10,000 planes, 6 million tons of supplies attack 5 areas (Utah, Omaha, Juno, Gold, Sword) on Normandy Beach… 120,000 men ashore by the end of the day…1 million ashore by the end of June…Allies retake France by August 1944! D-day

Nazis make last stand at Battle of the Bulge…but by 1/1945, Nazis are in full retreat… At Yalta Conference (2/1945), Big 3 finalize agreement on division of DE, USSR entering war against JP, and peace-keeping org., but struggle to agree on new gov’t in PL… By 3/1945, Berlin is surrounded… April 16,1945 – USSR takes Berlin! April 30, 1945 – Hitler commits suicide! May 7, 1945 – Nazis surrender! May 8, 1945 – V-E Day! Victory in Europe Day The End in Europe...
