1 Unit 9: WWII

2 Entry Task Please take out your Atom Bomb worksheets from yesterday.

3 Today’s Goal: Understand what happened in the bombings of Hiroshima & Nagasaki Understand two different perspectives of the bombing’s significance

4 The Bombing Final stages of WWII in 1945
U.S. decided to use their new weapon – the atomic bomb The bomb had been developed over several years through the “Manhattan Project”

5 The Bombing Paul Tibbets & the “Enola Gay”
Dropped “Little Boy” on Hiroshima: Aug. 6, 1945

6 The Bombing Frederick Bock & the “Bockscar”
Dropped “Fat Man” on Nagasaki: Aug. 9, 1945

7 The Bombing Fireball – 540,000 degrees F Shockwave Radioactivity
Black rain

8 The Bombing Within 4 months: 90,00-166,000 people died
½ the deaths happened on the first day Many more deaths in the years later

9 The Bombing Six days after Nagasaki, Japan announced their surrender
Because the U.S. gave no warning or opportunity for the Japanese to surrender, the ethics of America’s decision to use the bomb is still much-debated

10

11 Smithsonian Controversy
In 1995, the Smithsonian Institution (a collection of 19 museums) attempted to have an exhibit on the 50th anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb.

12 Smithsonian Controversy
It was cancelled after intense tension and debate over how to display pictures of the victims, and how many American lives would have been saved if they did not have to invade Japan (low number was 60,000 and the high number was 1,000,000).
