5. U.S. Congress18 Approves Annexation
Congressional leaders who wanted annexation made a proposal that Texas be annexed18 by a joint resolution18.
This required only a simple majority of votes in each house of Congress.
On February 28, 1843, Congress passed a joint resolution for annexation. Texas becomes the 28th state18

6. More Favorable Terms Texas could enter the Union as soon as its people

7. Texas Approves Annexation
President Anson Jones called a special session of the Texas Congress.
The Texas Congress quickly approved the terms of annexation.
A convention of the people of Texas met in Austin and approved annexation and also ratified the new state constitution.

On December 29, , President Polk signed the act that made Texas a state in the American Union.
The final step in making Texas a state came on February 19, 1846, at a ceremony in front of the Texas capitol.
