II. Types of Reactions
2
A. Synthesis (Combination) Reaction
When two or more simple compounds/atoms combine to form 1 complex compounds A + B AB Ex: 8Fe + S8 8FeS
3
B. Decomposition Reaction
Opposite of synthesis 1 complex compound becomes two or more simple compounds/atoms AB A + B Ex: H2O2 H2 + O2
4
C. Combustion Reaction Hydrocarbon reacts with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and water Exothermic reaction (heat is released) Example: CH4 + 2O2 CO2 + 2H2O
5
D. Single Replacement (Steal Yo Girl) Reaction
One atom replaces another atom in a compound. A + BC AC + B Example: 2Al + 6HCl 2AlCl3 + 3H2
6
E. Double Replacement (Dance Partners) Reaction
Cations and anions of two compounds switch places AB + CD AD + CB Ex: Pb(NO3)2 + 2KI PbI2 + 2KNO3
