3 Lesson Objectives To explain the basic and wider developmental needs of children and young people. To recognise the rights, responsibilities, expectations and reality of a good parent. To discuss factors which may affect a parents ability to parent.

4 The Good Parent …..????? In small groups discuss what you think a good parent is. Try to reach a consensus of opinion. Write all of the factors that you, as a group, consider constitutes a “good” parent. You will be required to feed back your ideas to the whole group. As a whole group we need to discuss what we consider to be a good parent and create a definitive list.

5 The needs of children: Basic Physical Care Rest and quiet periods
Safety Needs Emotional Warmth Stimulation and support/Role Models Guidance and Boundaries Stability and Consistency Physical = Skin, handwashing, noticing changes, sun care, hair, teeth, nappies, toilet training, basic toilet hygiene, enough sleep. Food, warmth Rest periods, quiet activities, sleep Being safe and secure, feeling safe and secure, protection from harm, thinking about what might harm a child. Provided with warmth and affection Cuddles Praise and encouragement Someone there to provide comfort if a child is afraid or upset Haven’t moved home or school / child care services too often Do fun things as a family A child is able to cope well in different situations

6 An overview of children’s Developmental needs
As a group, using the handout, summarise the: Physical Intellectual Emotional Social Developmental Stages of a child (this is revision!) Into a diagram.
