Aletia Bennett Professionals and community systems Western Washington University Instructor: Dr. S. Kincaid

2 LEARNINIG OUTCOME: Summarize the historical roots of community development and organizing, advocacy, and social movements. From the settlement house movement and pioneers in social services (including Jane Addams) I understand how the foundation for America’s human services was laid. Figure 1. 5 LEARNINIG OUTCOME: Analyze community systems and structures, and design and evaluate processes to initiate and sustain change through specific strategies, tactics, activities and social policy advocacy. . In order to have the impact that is desired the message must be targeted to the intended population, accessible, and clearly stated (Homan,2011,p.290). 6 These processes to initiate and sustain change through specific strategies, tactics, activities and social policy advocacy resulted in monumental changes in community structures and systems. "Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance." 7 CLOSE COMMUNITIES PROVIDE A CONTEXT FOR CHANGE: The communities that have close relationships with one another and the individuals that interrelate within those communities tend to have more of a bond with those communities (Homen, 2011, p. 46). Community Organizing Courtesy Google image

8 LEARNINIG OUTCOME: Record, assess, and reflect on experiences with community and the influence of human services values, attitudes, and ethics in relationship to community change. The influence of human services values, attitudes, and ethics in relationship to community change depends on the networking and structure. Through networking with community stakeholders and sharing a social service perspective on drug reform, the drug reform policy assignment gave me a social service perspective on values, attitudes, and ethics in relationship to community change. Bennett, A., 2014, Drug reform policy brief p.1

10 LEARNINIG OUTCOME: Analyze the systemic issues related to culture, diversity, and social class in the context of community systems. The ideologies (value and belief systems) are interrelated to the institutions and processes of a society (Sargent, 2006). How a community handles their relationships and issues is related to their ideologies and networking demographics. 11 Kafunda learning community
In a resilient system change is anticipated and community systems incorporate diversity and redundancy. The culture, diversity, and social class are interwoven in the tapestry of change. Cultural issues and available materials are an asset in this way of thinking of “what you have versus what you (think) you need”. (Wheatley, M. & Frieze, D., 2011). 12 It’s All About Relationships Summary of learning: Professionals and community systems
Human services is a tapestry of interwoven threads. There are fractal layers in the fabric. Everything is interconnected through relationships. Each thread having it’s unique impact on the entire tapestry. ~Aletia Bennett (2014) From the historical roots to the future of human services the issues that impact our profession are diverse and multi- dimensional. By being exposed and open to new paradigms we expand possibilities and explore different “lens” in which to view multiple perspectives that relate to human services. Tapestry Courtesy Google image
