Supplies: 5X7 planner, pens & pencils, 1 pkg college-ruled notebook paper, 1 box Kleenex, 1 plastic accordion folder w/dividers The purpose and goals for English IV are to further develop five strands introduced to students in elementary and middle school: Reading, where students read and understand a wide variety of literary and informational texts; Writing, where students compose a variety of written texts with a clear controlling idea, coherent organization, and sufficient detail; Research, where students are expected to know how to locate a range of relevant sources and evaluate, synthesize, and present ideas and information; Listening and Speaking, where students listen and respond to the ideas of others while contributing their own ideas in conversations and in groups; and Oral and Written Conventions, where students learn how to use the oral and written conventions of the English language in speaking and writing. In addition, we will spend a great deal of time on College & Career Prep. Winters High School Consequences Verbal Warning Detention Parent Conference Office Referral Classroom Rules Be prompt Be prepared Be respectful Grading Policy 60% Daily Work (Homework, Classwork, Quizzes, Journaling) 40% Assessments (Exams, Projects, Essays, Speeches/Presentations) If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you. Attendance & Tardies Attendance is mandatory-if you’re not in school you’re not learning! Please bring a doctor’s excuse or parents’ note to the attendance clerk when you are absent for an excused absence. The WHS Tardy Policy is as follows: 1st Tardy=Detention 2nd Tardy=Detention 3rd Tardy=Lunch Detention 4th + Tardies=1 day ISS/each Pg. 72 Student Handbook Cell Phones & Electronic Devices Students are asked to place their cellphone on the corner of their desk, face down, during class. I do allow students to read books on their phones. If students do not follow OR abuse the cellphone policy I will pick the phone up and turn it into the office. Parents must come to the WHS Office and pay $15 to repossess the students’ phone. Students may NOT retrieve their phone! Also, you may bring a Kindle or Nook to read from; however, YOU are completely responsible for your personal property. Make-Up Work & Retakes Students have one (1) day to make up work for every day of an excused absence. It is YOUR responsibility to ask ME for any missed assignments. If you know you will be gone for an extra-curricular activity please ask me for your work prior to the event. I will make every effort to get it to you—if I can’t, I will make arrangements with you. (Pg. 60) You may re-take exams and redo major assignments for half of your credit back. However, you must attend tutorials to study for your re-take. You have 5 school days from the time I return your paper to you, to re-take your exam. Academic Integrity I hold my students to the highest standards and have no tolerance for plagiarizing, cheating or lying. The consequences for such behavior & actions will be severe and in accordance with the Student Code Of Conduct. “No one will question your integrity if your integrity is not questionable.” —Nathaniel Bronner, Jr. SENIORS: ENGLISH IV involves the study of British Literature and further developing literary analysis skills and writing skills. We WILL spend time in class, daily, developing these skills! THIS CLASS WILL ALSO PROVIDE EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO PREPARE FOR PURSUING A COLLEGE EDUCATION, VOCATIONAL TRADE OR THE WORK FORCE. Success is the ONLY option in my classroom!
