Spanish-American War Cuba wanted independence from Spain
Americans felt sympathy for Cuba Feb 15, American battleship USS Maine sank in Havana harbor Killed 260 men No one ever figured what caused the explosion that sank the ship Several American newspaper blamed Spain “Remember the Maine!”

War lasted 4 months Spain gave up Cuba Many South Carolinians were against the war Did not think US was ready to fight another war Only one regiment from SC went to Cuba but the war was over by the time they arrived
