2 Composition Book Draw a new OS in your composition book on page 27.
Refer to PAGE 6 which is the OS for CMM.

3 What does objective mean?
No personal thoughts and feelings Unit 2 vocabulary word: Not sentimental Just the facts or points presented in the text

4 What does a summary include?
The Central Idea AKA Key Idea Supporting Details/Facts (reasons) from the beginning, middle, and end of the text that support your Central Idea/Key Idea.

5 How do I determine the key idea?
Use this model or formula! Known as the SOMETHING SENTENCE. Something/Somebody (strong verb) something but…..

6 Something Sentence (Key Idea)
FORMULA: Something/Somebody (strong verb) something but….. KEY IDEA: The Vikings and The Jets go head- to-head, but The Jets defeat the Vikings with a controversial touchdown.

7 Your first sentence should follow this format (Title + Author + KI)…
“Michaela Triumphant” by Kathy Satterfield describes the story of a young girl who overcame the great difficulty of being orphaned to achieve a new life. Then, follow with your SD x 3. Lastly, identify 1 CD and 1 CX or amend your summary to include them. CD: Highlight in Pink CX: Highlight in Yellow

9 Color Coding Green- Title Yellow- Author Pink- Verb Blue- central idea
With a partner, you are going to use your highlighters to color code a model summary. This is your key: Green- Title Yellow- Author Pink- Verb Blue- central idea Orange- Supporting Details

10 Example of a summary “Michaela, Triumphant” by Kathy Satterfield tells the story of a young girl that overcame the great difficulty of being orphaned to achieve a new life. 1Michaela is an orphan in war-torn Sierra Leone. 2She is treated very badly by the people that work at the orphanage. 3Despite this, Michaela held on to her dreams of becoming a dancer. 4She was eventually adopted by an American couple and was able to achieve her dreams of becoming a dancer.

11 Your Turn… Step One: Using your graphic organizer, find four important details about your text. (Highlight in orange). Step Two: Develop a starting sentence with the title, author, a verb, and central idea. Step Three: Follow the starting sentence with your four important details (chronological order). Step Four: End your summary by restating/rewording the central idea.
