These machines must only be operated when a qualified Technical Teacher or Technician is in the room. All operators must comply with the control measures identified below.

Only one person at a time should operate these machines
Teacher/Operator
The chuck guard should be used when the machine is in use.
Work piece or chuck key slipping / flying out.
The work piece should be securely held in a proper manner for its shape and cutting operation.
Teacher / Technician
The chuck key must never be left in the chuck.
Once a pupil has set up the lathe for operation it must be checked by the teacher before use.
Tool breaking and flaying out
Tools should be correctly ground for the material and operation they will be used on. Tool settings should always be checked by the teacher before use.
Teacher
Getting drawn into the rotating shaft or work piece.
Operators should not wear loose clothing and long hair must be contained so as not to be a hazard. Where clothing cannot be removed due to religious belief, every effort must be made to ensure that all loose items are contained.
The lathe must never be stopped by gripping the chuck or work piece.
Carcinogenic hazard from cutting fluid
Only oils which are considered not to be carcinogenic should be used.
Technician
Being cut from swarf left in machine bed
Swarf must only be handled with protective gloves when the machine power is isolated. Pupils should not attempt to remove swarf from the bed of the machine.
