1 Coldex disinstallation
4/12/2009

2 COLDEX – the history Designed in 1994 as simulation of a LHC vacuum chamber. Constructed at NIKHEF and delivered in 1997 after acceptance tests. Installed successively in EPA, in 2 different lines, in synchrotron radiation then positron and electron beams, between 1999 and 2001 Installed in b.113 for cryosorber studies with gas injection, 2001. Installed in SPS in 2002 close to the WAMPAC calorimeter, to measure heat loads and pressure dynamics induced by electron cloud in LHC type beams A modular, versatile test-bench, simulating an extended vacuum chamber at cold. Operated with 20,000l dewar or refrigerator. Recuperation for further studies (LHC related) is highly attractive, if not yet necessary If CC is NOT installed in BA4, COLDEX should stay in place 4/12/2009

6 Disinstallation steps
Uncabling Removal of ancillary equipment (helium pumping, primary vacuum pumps, bakeout racks, local power supplies, cable trays) → see 7 Removal of flexible transfer lines Stripping of experiment core: bellows, etc Removal of adjustment tables, substitution by temporary supports Disconnection of Coldex (4m) from Y-chambers Removal of Coldex Removal of Y-chambers Removal of Wampac Preliminary time estimation: >2 weeks 4/12/2009

7 Environment 4/12/2009

8 Re-installation steps
Installation of replacement drift section Recuperation of 2 VVSB sector valve (make 1 sector out of two, install a VVSA) → Spares 30kCHF to HiRadMat budget Modification of controls, PVSS supervision or Leave vacuum sectorization as, it is, blocking 2 expensive VVSB valves, but nothing to be done on vacuum controls Recuperation for CC Refrigerator Transfer lines? To negociate with Coldex owners… Translation tables? 0.5 tons versus 5 tons 4/12/2009

9 To conclude… Removing Coldex and substituting it with a drift section is possible However, LHC has not delivered all possible problems yet, so if CC is not installed in BA4 Coldex should remain in place Disinstallation should take recuperation into account: quite long disintallation project with respect to shutdown times (2-3 weeks, to be better evaluated with Coldex experts) 4/12/2009
