1 Model for Earth

2 Can you actually dig a hole to China?

3 What will you find as you dig through Earth to the other side
What will you find as you dig through Earth to the other side? What is the Earth made up of? Explain your journey as you travel through the earth. Is china actually below us? If you were to drill a hole directly down from Edmonton Alberta, where will you emerge from the other side of the planet? Myth Busted??!

4 1.1 Vocabulary Model Geologists Indirect Crust Mantle Lithosphere
Outer core Inner core

5 Models in Science A model is an idea of something that cant be fully known or seen. Making models of things in Science can be thought of as the "Art" of constructing models which approximate the Real World. It is a way to show an object or idea that is hard to picture/visualize it in real form

6 What is inside the Earth?
Geologists are scientists that study the earth Geologists have used a model to help them understand what the earth is made from By digging up the earths surface, we can easily study the top layer, but we cannot dig to the center of the earth. Too far, too hot!

7 Geologists must study the earth indirectly, just like how astronauts study space And how do they do that??? An indirect method is studying something not directly, using different tools and technology to get information

8 Layers of the Earth

9 Watch the movie trailer for Journey to the Center of the Earth
Watch the movie trailer for Journey to the Center of the Earth. Identify characteristics that you think are true and those you think are not true. Be prepared to share.

10 Essential Question: How are layers of the Earth different from one another?

11 The Earth is made up of 4 main layers:
Crust Mantle Outer Core Inner Core

12 Think of the layers of the Earth like the layers of a cake.

13 Use the Layers of the Earth Foldable to take notes

14 Land Ocean Oceanic Crust Continental Crust Crust

15 Crust Ocean Land Oceanic Crust Continental Crust Thinnest layer of the Earth can be 10km (areas of the ocean floor) to 90km deep (under mountains) It is were life is found! Made up of all the features we see on land Made up of large amounts of silicon and aluminum Two types of crust: oceanic crust and continental crust Composed of plates on which the continents and oceans rest In depth teaching about the plates and their movement will occur in the next essential question

16 The Earth’s crust is like the skin of an apple
The Earth’s crust is like the skin of an apple. Turn to an elbow partner and discuss why this statement is true. Next, come up with another example.

17 Upper Mantle Convection Currents Middle Mantle Lower Mantle Mantle

18 Upper Mantle Convection Currents Middle Mantle Lower Mantle Mantle Thickest layer of the Earth (making up 70% of the Earth’s mass), about 2900 km thick Upper mantle is solid like the crust (solid part of the mantle and crust is called the lithosphere) Under the upper mantle there is molten rock The movement of the lithospheric plates and the convection currents will be covered more in-depth during the next essential question.

19 Outer Core Inner Core Core

20 Outer Core Temperature is so high that this layer is molten (liquid) metal that is about 4,700°C Composed of the melted metals nickel and iron

21 Inner Core Solid sphere composed mostly of iron
It is solid because of the pressure from the outer core, mantle, and crust compressing it tremendously It is believed to be as hot as 6,650°C

22 The Earth is like a peach or a boiled egg
The Earth is like a peach or a boiled egg. Turn to a seat partner and discuss these analogies. Come up with another analogy and be prepared to share.

23 Lithosphere – Crust and Upper Layer of the Mantle
Inner Core Solid Outer Core Liquid Mantle Lithosphere – Crust and Upper Layer of the Mantle Layer of the Mantle (asthenosphere) that consists of hot rock of tar-like consistency, which slowly moves

24 The lithosphere (crust and upper mantle) is divided into separate plates which move very slowly in response to the “convecting” part of the mantle.

25 What do these two images tell us about the layers of the Earth?

26 Temperature increases as depth increases

27 Look at the information in the graph and table below
Look at the information in the graph and table below. What’s the relationship between depth and density/pressure?

28 Density and Pressure increase as depth increases

29 Add this statement to the arrow going down on your foldable.
Temperature, Density and Pressure increases as depth increases Add this statement to the arrow going down on your foldable.

30 Which layer of the Earth has the greatest temperature, pressure, and density?
Core

31 Summary The earth is layered with a lithosphere (crust and uppermost mantle), convecting mantle, and a dense metallic core. Pressure, temperature, and density increases as depth increases.
