2 I. Westward expansion It intensified nationalism and made sectionalism worse Everyone wanted to grow, but they argued about how Four major land acquisitions were: Louisiana Oregon Texas Mexican Cession

4 II. Louisiana Pres. Jefferson bought the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon Doubled the size of the US Gave US complete control of the Mississippi River Farmers could ship their crops to New Orleans for global sale Jefferson suddenly had a loose interpretation of the Constitution

Louisiana New states carved out of this land were equal to the original 13 Thanks to the Articles of Confederation Lots of land to sell at cheap prices More property owners meant more voters Strengthened the Democratic Party Made up of mostly farmers Andrew Jackson was the 1st western president & a Democrat

6 III. Oregon Trail The US claimed Oregon Territory
Lewis and Clark explored Oregon when they went to the Pacific Ocean after exploring the Louisiana Purchase Americans traded in furs and farmed US/British joint occupation until treaty in 1846 Split it at the 49th Parallel

7 IV. The Southwest Texas Mexican Cession
US annexed it after nine years of independence Had belonged to Mexico Mexican Cession Land gained with a treaty that ended the Mexican-American War

8 V. Trail of Tears Jackson announced policy to move natives to the West
Seminoles in Florida resisted Cherokee in Georgia used the courts Both attempts failed Indians in the SE were moved to Indian Territory (OK) on the Trail of Tears (1830s)

9 VI. Nullification SC used states’ rights to nullify the tariff (VA & KY) Jackson was determined to collect Compromise reduced the tariff over time SC rescinded the nullification but didn’t say nullification was wrong
