1 September 6, 2017 Block

2 What Makes the Planets Move the way they do?
On a sheet of paper to be kept in your binder, answer this question. Your answer should be several sentences long and include evidence and experience to help support your answer. Also date your answer so that at the end of this unit you will be able to reflect on your initial thoughts and ideas.

3 Turn and Talk-Movie Discussion
Discuss the video and identify the following: What causes the planets/Earth to move the way they do? What factors affect the motion of an object? How can you change the motion of an object? What do you need to know in order to understand the motion? (think about how we could test it) After our discussion, please add this information to your notes in your binder.

4 Who’s The Fastest?

5 The Challenge You were contacted by Mr. Cusumano to determine who is the fastest person in 9th grade. You will only be able to gather this information during your science class. Since students have various science teachers during every hour of the day you will need to design a lab which can be used by all teachers. Before sharing this lab with all teachers, we will first try to figure out this information for just our class. Design a lab to find the fastest student in the classroom.  Be specific in your procedures and include any details that you feel are important.  You will need to collect data and have a visual representation of your data to share. You will have access to various lab tools, the track and football field, timing tools, and other items upon request.   With your group, create a rough draft of your lab procedure for peer review.

6 Writing the lab Requirements:
You must assign roles to each member of the group Project Manager- This person will be responsible for keeping people on task, making sure all voices are heard and that members are respectful, etc. Recorder-This person is responsible for writing the information down throughout design and execution of the lab. Material Manager-This person is responsible for collecting materials, making sure items are used properly, and all items are turned in after the lab is completed. Quality Control Manager-This person is responsible for the collection and recording of the data obtained during the lab Everyone-you will be writing a formal lab report after completing the data collection. Please make sure you are taking an active role every step of the way.

7 Requirements: Write Your Lab
Design a lab to find the fastest student in the classroom.  Be specific in your procedures and include any details that you feel are important.   You will need to collect data and have a visual representation of your data to share. Make sure you include this information in the design of your lab. You will have access to various lab tools, the track and football field, timing tools, and other items upon request.   With your group, create a rough draft of your lab procedure for peer review.

8 Peer CRitique Take a post it note and walk around the room and review each of the labs. Please provide feedback to your peers so that even if yours is not selected it will be someone from this class. When providing feed back please stick to these three types of comments. You should provide feed back to minimally 4 other groups. “We think you need to add ___ because…” “We think you should change ____ because…” “We are wondering about ____ because…”

9 Time to Revise Use the feedback to make any changes to your labs.

10 Preparation for Data Collection
Create any charts you may need to use to gather and organize the information you have. Turn a list of supplies into Mrs. Newman to make sure they are available for you tomorrow. Include the location you are going to run your test; track or gym. Discuss with your group anything else you may need for tomorrow.
