3. London regeneration Why was regeneration necessary? Discuss!
For nearly seventeen years, between July 1981 and March 1998, the London Docklands Development Corporation(LDDC) worked to secure the regeneration of the London Docklands.
Why was regeneration necessary? Discuss!
There were job losses over a short period of time, as the Docks closed. Between 1978 and 1983, over 12,000 jobs were lost so new places of employment were necessary.
Many development sites were poorly served by the local infrastructure so it was necessary to regenerate to attract businesses to the area.
Social problems – high numbers of unemployed people, high levels of deprivation, crime, poorly skilled / educated people.
Environmental problems – deindustrialisation (decline of industry) derelict land, contaminated soil, fly tipping and issues with vermin (rats).
