Tuesday 10/2/18 Notebook Entry: Which pool float (in the picture to the right) do you think will provide the most buoyant force for two people to sit on? Explain why.

Discuss in your group Did your last boat float? If it did not float, why do you think it sank? Describe buoyant force and density in your answer. How could you make the boat better able to stay afloat? Use what you have learned about gravity , buoyant force and density to answer this.

Build a Better Boat 2 Just when you thought you had it all figured out, the gatekeeper tells you that you that your boat must float through the 5 cm opening and carry two more keys (one more hex nut). He wants you to show him a final design that will carry 8 keys (4 hex nuts) and fit through the 5 cm opening. He will then be confident in giving you the keys to the fort.

Criteria Build a Boat 3 Constraints
Float for 20 seconds Carry 8 keys (4 hex nuts) Build and Test in 10 minutes 5” x 5” piece of tinfoil No other materials Must fit through a 5cm wide opening. Discuss design ideas with your group. Decide on one idea. Remember to maximize buoyant force!

Boat 3 Design Plan Follow the first two bulleted directions at the top of your boat records page. Starting at ________________ you group must be ready to build and test.

Build a Boat – 10 minutes!!! Build your boat according to your grid paper design. Float your boat. Decide where you want to place the hex nuts before you start. Be sure to start the timer as soon as you put the keys in the boat. Record the length of time your boat floated and the number of keys it held. Complete your Boat Records Sheet and turn in when you are finished.
