BACKGROUND Emancipation Proclamation-1863 “Separate but Equal”
14th Amendment guaranteed all citizens with equal protection under the law 15th Amendment said the right to vote shall not be denied on the basis of race Emancipation Proclamation was established by Abraham Lincoln that freed slaves Separate but equal prevented equality because colored people were still being separated in public activities. In Plessy vs. Ferguson, the court decided separate institutions are okay if they’re equal

Enacted between 1876 and 1965 Enforced racial segregation in the South Operated primarily in Southern and border states

SEGREGATION Blacks were “free” but set apart
Two different groups living separate lives but having the same things Touched every aspect of everyday life Separate facilities provided were almost always horrific Southern state legislatures passed laws requiring the separation of whites from blacks in public transportation and schools. Ex:Whites did not use courtesy titles of respect when referring to blacks, for example, Mr., Mrs., Miss., Sir, or Ma'am. Instead, blacks were called by their first names. Blacks had to use courtesy titles when referring to whites, and were not allowed to call them by their first names. White motorists had the right-of-way at all intersections. Jim Crow criminal justice system was all-white

HOW DID IT AFFECT THE COLORED?
If necessary, violence was used to keep blacks at the bottom of the racial hierarchy Most extreme forms of Jim Crow violence were lynchings Their lives were at risk if they did not obey the Jim Crow laws Lynching: Putting a person to death by mob action without due process of law

REPEAL Abolished in the 1960s through the efforts of the Civil Rights Movement Jim Crow Laws cease to exist Some people still racist today
