2 True or False? If false, what can we change to make it true?
Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday is a national day in the USA. African-Americans suffered because of laws in the American North. Segregation means that a black person can sit next to a white person on the bus. King wanted all protests and marches to be violent. King’s dream was for a better world for everyone.

3 Review Introduction – page 7
What did King’s early life teach him about segregation and white people? Why did MLK move North? Why did he return to the South after college? How did Jim Crow laws change life for African Americans in the South?

4 Preview Pages 8-14 In your group, divide these topics up. You have five minutes. Each person will quickly read about the following ideas: Coretta Scott Rosa Parks Montgomery Bus Boycott Thoreau and Gandhi Then share what you learned with your group. You have five minutes.

5 Discussion How do people protest? In other words, how do people show they disagree with the government? What are some freedoms you have today that your parents didn’t? What are some reasons that people segregate? What was the last speech that you listened to?
