5 Journey to the Afterlife
With your group, read about the Egyptian’s journey to the afterlife. You need to pick out 5 major steps to getting to the afterlife. You may write/highlight along the way. Using BOTH sources of information, create a storyboard showing the process of the Egyptians going to the afterlife. Write a description explaining each step of the journey.

6 Journey to the Afterlife
Step one They would mummify the body in order for the soul to recognize the body in the afterlife and return to it to receive food and drink.

7 Journey to the Afterlife
Step 2 Opening of the Mouth Ceremony Prepared the dead for eating and drinking in the afterlife.

8 Journey to the Afterlife
Step 3 The souls could then begin their journey to the afterlife on heavenly boats. They had to face challenges and obstacles, like dangerous animals.

9 Journey to the Afterlife
Step 4 The weighing of the heart decided if the person was honest enough to go to the afterlife.

10 Journey to the Afterlife
Step 5 The person entered the afterlife and spent their days eating, drinking, and visiting with friends and family members who had died. This Egyptian heaven was called "Aaru", or The Field of Reeds. This perfect Egypt looked like the ancient Nile Delta did, with fields of reeds stretching on forever. These beautiful fields were abundant with food for the dead. The fishing and hunting were bountiful, and the farming was done either by the deceased or by magical workers called Shawabti. Life in the Field of Reeds was a natural continuation of life in Egypt. The pharaohs remained pharaohs, the gods were the same, and the workers had to work. They ate, loved, married, and worshiped.

11 Closure Why do you think some Egyptians were unable to have loved ones mummified?
