1 Hooray for Film Shoots on and off the Docks
Marifrances Trivelli, Los Angeles Maritime Museum Greg Gorga, Santa Barbara Maritime Museum

2 In many communities, filming is a common occurrence…

3 But California was not the top location for movies in 2014…the winner was…Lousiana!
This means a film shoot could be coming to your Museum – be prepared.

4 One way to attract attention from film scouts is to advertise your site.

5 Scouting for a maritime location (or not)
Even if you don’t advertise, a scout could come calling one day…

6 Have some “money shots” of your museum ready to share

7 This photograph shows how the Santa Barbara Maritime can be transformed…

8 Thin about the IMPACT on your museum…in terms of public access, disruption of tours, etc, and vulnerability of the artifacts.

9 A notice of filming is mandatory in Los Angeles
A notice of filming is mandatory in Los Angeles. It provides the community with the dates / type of filming, and contact information

10 I’ll Just Poke My Head in for a Minute or Two…

11 Put Everything in Writing
What to include in your permit: Exact duration of shoot (a “day” is any portion of the day that the film crew is on site. This includes prep and strike days) The fees and damage deposit Insurance and any required city permits Names of film monitors and rates Overtime fees

12 Know when to say NO ..and don’t forget your mission

13 Most film crews do not know the difference between a prop and
an artifact- make sure your curator or collections manager is on site.

14

15 Example of a communication mishap – taking up the Museum parking

16 Remember Even if your museum is not being used for filming, the production companies in your area will agree to make a donation to your Museum in order to mitigate the impact of their presence…don’t be afraid to ask!

17 Example of filming at L. A
Example of filming at L.A. Maritime Museum - the museum’s tugboat was covered in cocoa powder to look “aged”. As stated on the permit the film company had to remove all of the powder at the end of the shoot, leaving the boat “in the same condition as which it was found”.

18 Our tug is a star! And the Museum earned money for its future shipyard bill….
