1 We shall add and subtract polynomial expressions.
Learning Objective We shall add and subtract polynomial expressions. CFU What are we going to do today? Activate Prior Knowledge Simplify each expression. 1. -3(y2 + 6y) + y 2. x – 2(3x – 1)

2 Polynomial:- (poly meaning "many") consisting of several terms
Concept Development Polynomial:- (poly meaning "many") consisting of several terms separated by addition and subtraction. Examples: Academic Vocabulary Monomial Binomial Trinomial Polynomial

3 Polynomial:- (poly meaning "many") consisting of several terms
Concept Development Cont. Polynomial:- (poly meaning "many") consisting of several terms separated by addition and subtraction. Ex.: Ex.:

4 Skill Development/Guided Practice
If there are parentheses, distribute the negative sign and rewrite as addition. Arrange in columns of like terms and then add. Write the final solution as standard form. Examples: CFU: Explain what we do in Step 1? CFU: Explain what we do in Step 2? CFU: Explain what we do in Step 3?

7 What is area of the gray border surrounding the garden bed?
Relevance Peter is a landscape designer and is trying to create a garden. Peter wants to design the garden so that it resembles a square contained within a rectangle. The modeled area of the square is given by the expression 2x2 + 5x – 2, and the area of the rectangle is given by the expression 8x2 – 7. Peter wants to figure out the area of the rectangle minus the area of the square in order to determine what area he has available for planting some plants. What is the area Peter will have available for planting? Bill is creating a garden in his backyard. Bill wants the length of his garden bed to be seven yards more than twice the width of the bed. Bill also wants to create a border around the garden that is 2 yards wide, as shown in the figure below. What is area of the gray border surrounding the garden bed? 6x2 – 5x – 5

8 Closure Arrange in columns of like terms and then add. If there are parentheses, distribute the negative sign and rewrite as addition. Write the final solution as standard form. CFU: What are the three steps to adding or subtracting polynomial expressions? Independent Practice/Periodic Reviews
