Tells the reader what the author wants him/her to know about the subject.

3. Where do I begin?
Before you write your topic sentence, ask yourself the following questions:
What is the subject of the paragraph?
What do I want the reader to know about that subject?

4. Example Subject: Want reader to know: Sentence: Fuel-efficient cars
help the environment
Sentence:
Buying a fuel efficient car is one way you can help the environment.
